Model Muslim

In 2015, the BBC published a series of programs about world religions, including a series called “My Life, My Religion: Islam.” The program followed the life of two young Muslim children, including a young girl named Sara. Throughout the course of the program, Sara makes the decision to fully commit to her faith and wear the hijab full-time. Sara aspires to be a fashion designer when she grows up, and could perhaps become the next Anniesa Hasibuan. Hasibuan was the first to design an all-hijab fashion show at New York Fashion Week 2016. This year, she made history once more by executing an all-hijab fashion show with exclusively immigrant models. According to an article by NBC, Hasibuan’s goal was to incorporate Muslim fashion into the mainstream, and show that Muslim women are not as drastically different as stereotypes may present them to be.
